Staying Focused When Everything Is Against You
The weather is beautiful. It’s early summer and my morning runs are still enjoyable. When I get home, the weeds in the garden beckon to be pulled. There is so much laundry. So much. It’s mostly wet towels. The kids have to be driven to their various camps and upon returning home they have so much to say. So, how is a work at home mom to focus?
- Plan your hours. I set my office hours and I shut the door. Does that keep the kids out? No. But I can tell them to go do something else because they know the rules. I will be with them soon, and they know the time is coming when we will go to the pool or shopping for camp. But when I’m in the office, let me work. If you host parties you’ll want to keep your hours. Set aside a few times a week that work best for you and schedule your hostesses during that time. No booking for a allotted time? That’s not an evening off. Use those as office hours to book out your next week. Best of all, when office hours are over. Leave. Back to the kids, the pool, the shopping, the laundry. You and your kids deserve that time.
- Waiting time is working time. If your family is anything like mine, you do a lot of waiting. This is more difficult to accomplish with small children but with older kids and teens it works like a dream. If you have to wait on your child at the orthodontist (or if they’re at a hair appointment as my daughter currently is) plan to work. Grab your lap top on the way out or access your Flourishapp account from your smart phone. Call or text a few customers, engage with them on social media. Use your time wisely. That time spent waiting doesn’t have to be wasted and can give you actual quality time with your family later.
- Reward yourself. When you work for yourself the rewards don’t always come in beautiful packages from someone else. They might for sure. You might be working for a company that gives great freebies and super fun prizes. But if by chance you don’t, it’s ok to reward yourself. Did you just make the biggest sale you’ve ever made? Maybe a little something you’ve had your eye on from your own line would be a great prize. Did you work hard and make all your calls in record time tonight? Perhaps you can walk the dogs instead of doing the laundry (I love that reward!) If you don’t have dogs then a piece of dark chocolate is one of my other go to prizes! You deserve to be rewarded for your efforts, since you’re your own boss…don’t work your fingers to the bone. Reward yourself like you would an employee who had done a great job (or even better!)
To stay focused this summer, schedule your work hours, use waiting time as working time and reward yourself for a job well done. I think when September and October roll back around you’ll be happy about where you are in your business if you stay on track all summer!
